RUTH NEUBAUER, MSW
Ruth is uniquely qualified to facilitate groups regarding issues that confront Women Over 50 in an interdisciplinary way. She has a long-standing interest in developmental theory and practice, particularly as it applies to women.
In addition to co-founding “Retirement” or WHAT NEXT™, she is on the faculty of the Washington School of Psychiatry, and taught psychoanalytic concepts to the lay public through American University’s Institute for Learning in Retirement as well as Politics and Prose, an independent bookstore in Washington, DC. Ruth now also teaches through Denver University's OLLI - Osher Lifelong Learning Institute - in Denver, Colorado.
As a licensed clinical social worker, she maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Denver, Colorado working with individual adults and couples.
Ruth has been working for over twenty-five years with groups as diverse
as support groups in homeless shelters and support groups for Women Over
50.
She has directed an early music performing group, and is currently teaching
both music and psychology. Ruth is also a published photographer, poet, and writer.

KAREN VAN ALLEN, MSW
Karen has over 30 years of experience facilitating groups, with a focus on supporting women in expressing creativity, facilitating transitions and deepening communication skills.
She has worked as a group facilitator and workshop leader for most of her professional life, beginning with one of the first Assertive Communication Courses for women given at a local community college. She also presented many public talks on the subject of women's rights and assertive communication.
Karen is a licensed clinical social worker. She has a private practice in psychotherapy working with adults with a focus on women in transition.
Karen has led trainings and workshops on topics including stress management, supervisory skills, communication, customer service, conflict management, training of trainers, and creativity for local and federal government agencies as well as for health care organizations.
She has co-facilitated several groups on Psychotherapy and Buddhism for the Shambhala Meditation Center of Washington, DC and is co-teaching a course on Happiness in the context of Tibetan Buddhism in the summer of 2007.
Karen’s interest in the arts has led to experimentation in oil painting, collage, paper sculpting and photography. For several years, her paper bowls have been featured at the Bowls of Compassion annual fund raiser for Miriam’s Kitchen, co-sponsored by the DC Shambhala Center and the World Bank. In addition, she has facilitated creativity workshops for women and co-facilitated expressive arts groups for adult survivors.
